Joe Cocker (born 20 May 1944) is an English rock/blues singer who came to popularity in the 1960s, and is most known for his gritty voice, spastic physical performances, and his cover versions of popular songs, particularly those of The Beatles. Cocker was born John Robert Cocker at 20 Tasker Road, Crookes, Sheffield, the youngest son of a civil servant. He left school early and became an apprentice gas fitter. In 1961, he started his musical career in the pubs of Sheffield.
“Never Tear Us Apart” was a single released by Australian rock group INXS in August 1988. It was also included on the band’s sixth studio album, Kick. The music is by Andrew Farriss, and the lyrics are by Michael Hutchence.
“Never Tear Us Apart” is a sensuous ballad, layered with synthesizers and containing dramatic pauses before the instrumental breaks. Kirk Pengilly lends a cathartic saxophone solo near the end. According to the liner notes of Shine Like It Does: The Anthology (1979–1997), the song was originally composed on piano as a bluesy number in the style of Fats Domino. Producer Chris Thomas suggested a synth-based arrangement instead.
The video for the song, featuring an extended intro, was filmed in Prague along with “Guns in the Sky” and “New Sensation,” all directed by Richard Lowenstein.
The single reached #24 in the UK, and stayed on the charts for 7 weeks. In the US, it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Michael Hutchence’s coffin was carried out of St. Andrews Cathedral by the remaining members of INXS and younger brother Rhett, as “Never Tear Us Apart” was played in the background. This song is now thought of by many original INXS fans as Hutchence’s anthem.
The song was used in the opening sequence of the director’s cut of the 2001 cult film Donnie Darko. It would have featured in the original release, had the rights for it not been deemed too expensive by the producers. (”The Killing Moon” by Echo and the Bunnymen served as its replacement.)
In 2006 the song was voted ‘Nation’s Favourite Lyric’ by viewers of pay TV music channel VH1 in Australia.
Recently, this song has been adopted by The Squadron, the Newcastle United Jets supporter group, and sung in unison at the 40th and 85th minute of their A-League association football matches. This is in homage to the line, “cause we all have wings, but some of us don’t know why”, used now in reference to the Jets symbol of their club.

Jeff Robinov, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President, tells The Wall Street Journal that the Man of Steel will be reintroduced on the big screen without regard to 2006’s Superman Returns.
“Superman didn’t quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to,” Robinov says. “It didn’t position the character the way he needed to be positioned. … Had Superman worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009.”
There’s no mention whether Superman Returns director Bryan Singer will be part of the reboot. Earlier this week, Variety’s Anne Thompson reported “that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project.”
Taking a page from Marvel, Warner Bros. has reversed its earlier position of using the now-stalled Justice League of America as a launching pad for other DC properties. Instead, it will focus on solo features to build toward a multicharacter film.
“Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own,” Robinov says.
That may sound less like a “strategy” and more like a mad cash-grab. Something else that might not sit right with some fans is Robinov’s determination to explore the darker side of super-heroes: “We’re going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it.”
According to The Journal, Warner Bros. plans to release four comic-book movies in the next three years: the third Batman installment, the Superman reboot, and two focusing on other DC Comics characters. (It’s unclear whether Watchmen is included in that count.) Likely candidates include Green Arrow/Super Max, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel and, perhaps, Jonah Hex. The re-releases featured alterations to the original films, primarily motivated by the improvement of CGI and other special effects technologies, which allowed visuals that were not possible to achieve at the time of the original filmmaking. Lucas continued to make changes to the original trilogy for subsequent releases, such as the first ever DVD release of the trilogy on September 21, 2004.[8]
