G.S.E. (Gymnastic Club Evagoras) is a football stadium located in Famagusta, Cyprus and is the home ground of Anorthosis Famagusta FC and Nea Salamina. G.S.E. remains abandoned and in bad condition since 1974 when Turkey invaded the island of Cyprus and took over 30% of it including the city of Famagusta. After 1974 Anorthosis used many football stadiums all around Cyprus like Dasaki Stadium, Dimotiko Stadio Aradippou, Paralimni Stadium, Tsirion Stadium in Limassol, Old GSZ and Neo GSZ Stadium in Larnaka. In 1986 Anorthosis build its own stadium called Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium.
Supporters of Anorthosis are known as MAXHTEC (fighters in greek). The idea is that with fight they’ll get to the top and return back to their beloved town of Famagusta. Anorthosis’ fans are spread all over the island due to the Turkish invasion. They are SI.FI. (supporters associations) all over the island and in other countries as well (Greece,UK etc) . The majority of tha fans live in Larnca, as the temporary stadium is based there. Also there is a massive amount of fans in Limassol and Nicosia. MAXHTEC, the ultras, usually get the North tier of stadium. Anorthosis rivals, but not enemies, are APOEL Nicosia, AC Omonia, AEL Limassol, Apollon Limassol and AEK Larnaca. The main enemy of Anorthosis used to be Nea Salamis FC but the rivalry has weathered out since they both are away from their homes in Famagusta. MAXHTEC are considered right-wing, although that’s not always the case. They put up Greek Flags but they put up Republic of Cyprus flags as well.

Debut: 09.08.1990

Retirement: 02.11.2008

Tests: 132

Wickets: 619

As captain: 14 Tests

Statistics that define a memorable career; facts that will be consigned to the record books now; numbers to which there will be no further additions.

Anil Kumble [Images] has announced his retirement from Test cricket. And it is a quiet announcement, akin to his achievements.

It’s been 18 long years since India played England [Images] in the second Test at Old Trafford — 18 years since Kumble made his debut picking up three wickets, Allan Lamb being the first. There have been 131 Tests thereafter and 616 more wickets and a career to die for. A career that has had many ups, a few downs and one common factor: a quiet entry and an equally quiet exit. There is no hullabaloo about Kumble’s retirement whatsoever. The decision had been made after considerable deliberation and less consultation.

* ‘It’s the end of an era’

But now that Kumble had decided to hang up his boots, he didn’t shy away from giving various explanations. After all, this was the last time he was doing it.

“It was not a tough decision to make as such. But, definitely, it is tough when you have played for 18 years,” justified Kumble. “But the body gave me the decision and this injury helped it. I had over the years kept fighting but the body kept saying that you can’t.

“I also was not bowling at my best, the way I have bowled over the years. So it was the right time for me to move on.”

The outgoing captain also surprised a bit, saying that the decision happened overnight.

“I think I had already made the decision yesterday,” he admitted. “And I also I knew that I won’t be fit for the Nagpur Test. I have a nasty cut and have had 11 stitches. They would have come of on November 8 and that would have been the third day of the Nagpur Test. I didn’t want to let the team down and I was also sure that I would leave the squad after this series in any case.”

There were increasing calls for him to quit over the last few months.

Some not-so-impressive performances coupled with the fact that, at 38, he is not getting any younger ensured the voices only became louder. Add to it the fitness woes. Did Kumble make the decision under pressure?

“I didn’t take the decision because of the criticisms,” he clarified. “The body was asking me a question everyday and I didn’t think it was possible for me now to go through the grind of Test cricket.

“I did inform my teammates one by one and then I informed the Chairman of Selectors (Kris Srikkanth) at lunch.”

The fact that he announced his decision at the Ferozshah Kotla ensured it was a memorable farewell Kumble took 58 wickets in seven Tests at Kotla, including all 10 against Pakistan in 1999.

“Delhi [Images] has been special. I have fond memories of Delhi as a cricketer and also a team member,” recalled Kumble, before adding, “Ideally, I would have liked to finish the series here.”

Now that he has hung up his boots, how does he look back at his career in hindsight?

“I have done pretty well in my career. I can proudly say that I have given my 100 per cent right throughout my career,” said Kumble. “I had to go through a lot of things early in my career. People questioned me on my ability, fitness, form etc. But my self-belief kept me motivated.

“The second phase of my career was certainly more satisfying — because we won many Tests away from home.”

And how would he be liked to be remembered as?

“I like to be remembered for putting the team before the self and as one who raised the bar for the team,” said Kumble, confidence personified.

His Test career might have seen the curtains but Kumble will be playing — in the Indian Premier League [Images].

“IPL is a contractual obligation, so I will play in it,” he justified. “But in terms of international and first class cricket, I am through.”

And also through is another chapter in Indian cricket history, a chapter that is unparalleled, or, as Kris Srikkanth put it, “will be very difficult to replace”.

Sydney FC v Queensland Roar 4 - Oct - 2008

Musialik’s late strike saves Sydney

Sydney FC midfielder Stuart Musialik stole an amazing 1-1 draw against Queensland Roar with a neat strike deep into stoppage time.

Scottish import Charlie Miller continued the incredible start to his A-League career, scoring his fifth goal in seven appearances in what looked to be a 49th minute winner at the Sydney Football Stadium.

But right at the death Musialik latched on to a long throw in from fellow Socceroos squad member Shannon Cole to snatch an unlikely point for the hosts.

“It would have been an injustice if we got nothing out of the game,” Sydney coach John Kosmina said later.

“We nearly tore them apart in the first half and in the second they did not outplay us but we outplayed ourselves.”

“But the goal we conceded surprisingly rattled us a bit.”

The match was not without controversy either, as Sydney were denied a strong penalty claim in the 80th minute when Roar midfielder Massimo Murdocca appeared to handle the ball inside the area.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek was part of the 12,403-strong crowd in Sydney to analyse the performances of three players he named in the 35-man squad to face Qatar in the October 15 World Cup qualifier in Brisbane - Roar skipper Craig Moore and Sydney pair Musialik and Cole.

Verbeek is likely to whittle down the squad before it assembles for the first time in Brisbane on Wednesday and could have been a final audition, particularly for Musialik and Cole.

Miller, who has one international cap, has been a revelation since joining the Roar from Belgian side Lierse SK, already breaking an A-League record by scoring in each of his first four matches.

The 32-year-old former Rangers midfielder Miller netted with a low shot from just outside the penalty area after Sydney’s defenders afforded him too much space.

Queensland coach Frank Farina could not hide his disappointment at conceding such a late equaliser.

“I reckon Kossie should go and buy a lotto ticket tonight after getting out of jail, with 30 seconds to go,” Farina said.

“We are disappointed. We could have finished them off but all credit to them for fighting till the end.”

Unheralded 21-year-old Matt Mundy held his own at the back for Queensland in his A-League debut.

An accountancy student and part-time retail worker, Mundy got the call-up because fellow rookie Luke DeVere was on duty with the Young Socceroos, Ben Griffin is suspended and Josh McCloughan is still sidelined.
